Could Your Bicycle Parts Have Caused Your Bicycle Accident?

There can be many contributing factors to bicycle accidents, and not all of them are the result of rider or motorist actions. Sometimes the bicycle, or its parts, can be the cause.

Two of the world’s biggest names in bicycle components have recently issued a recall for thousands of pairs of disc brakes installed in several high performance bicycles.

In 2013, a well-known manufacturer recalled over 6,000 pairs of cable-actuated mechanical disc brakes for road and cyclocross bicycles.

In November and December of the same year, another popular brakes manufacturer recalled their hydraulic rim and disc brake models as well as some 19,000 sets of hydraulic disc or hydraulic caliper brakes due to their potential for failure in freezing temperatures.

Why Disc Brakes Can Be a Hazard

A bicycle traveling at high speed generates high energy which requires heat in order to maintain a safe speed or stop the bicycle. Dissipating the heat generated during braking is important for the safety of the rider.

Unlike the older brake models with larger brake rotor diameters, the new disc brakes are narrow and unable to cope with the heat generated from braking. Disc brakes are a recent innovation that allows bicycles to travel at higher speeds and make longer descents.

They promise higher performance but were marketed quickly before the Product Safety Commission and American Society for Testing and Materials were able to evaluate their performance and safety.

How Can I Claim Compensation for Bicycle Crash Injuries?

In 2011, 677 cyclists were killed and 48,000 were injured in bicycle crashes in the United States. Loss of braking power poses serious risks for riders of high-performance bicycles and is a leading cause of bicycle crashes – and a bicycle accident can result in severe injuries, and even death.

If you have experienced a bicycle crash that you believe may have been caused by a product that has been recalled for safety reasons, then it is important to seek the advice of an experienced personal injury lawyer.

In the Las Vegas area, the personal injury and accident law office of Bertoldo, Baker, Carter, and Smith can help you obtain compensation for your medical bills, ongoing treatment expenses, long-term or permanent disabilities, lost income and pain and suffering.
