Crash on Rainbow Boulevard
The recent fatal accident occurred on a Sunday evening near the intersection of Rainbow Boulevard and Westcliff Drive. A 2007 Toyota Corolla carrying a man and a woman was attempting to turn left onto a private driveway located just south of Westcliff Drive. As they did so, a 2007 Chrysler 300 heading south on Rainbow Boulevard collided with the right front side of the Toyota. The Toyota rolled over multiple times before coming to a stop. Sadly, both of the occupants of the Toyota were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident and were thrown from the car. They were declared dead at the scene of the accident. The Chrysler continued traveling forward, running over a curb and colliding with the side of the Silver State Schools Credit Union. The driver of the Chrysler was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Based on accident reconstruction and witness accounts from the scene of the crash, Las Vegas Metro Police believe that the Chrysler was traveling at a high rate of speed at the time of the crash.
Speed a common factor in fatal accidents
Speeding is one of the deadliest driving behaviors on American roads. According to the US Department of Transportation, speeding was a factor in 27% of all fatal accidents in the US in 2016. Speeding leads to fatalities for a number of reasons. Speeding reduces the amount of time that a driver has to react to a change in roadway conditions, such as a light turning red or another vehicle turning in front of the speeding car. Speed also multiplies the force of a collision, turning what could have been a minor accident into a serious or fatal collision. Drivers whose speeding results in catastrophic injuries to accident victims may face serious financial liability through a personal injury lawsuit for their dangerous behavior.
