Abilify Lawyers in Las Vegas, NV

What Does the FDA’s Warning for Abilify Mean to Patients Across the United States?

The US National Library of Medicine describes Abilify, technically named Aripiprazole, as a dopamine and serotonin stabilizer that is used to manage symptoms of schizophrenia, acute manic, and mixed episodes associated with bipolar I disorder. If you or someone you know has been prescribed Abilify and suffered devastating side effects as a result, we can help you hold the pharmaceutical companies responsible.

Were Patients Aware of the Destructive Side Affects when Prescribed Abilify?

That depends on when the drug was prescribed and consumed. In early May 2016, the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued a Drug Safety Communication warning that the possible damaging side effects from taking Abilify can include:

  • Binge eating
  • Compulsive gambling
  • Hypersexuality
  • Impulse control disorder
  • Incontrollable urges
  • Habitual shopping

The FDA, acting as a subsidiary of the US Department of Health and Human Services, provided a follow-up Safety Alert for Human Medical Products that delivered the same warning of potential side effects. The communications led to an official warning being attached to prescriptions as they are filled by pharmacists, including attaching a FDA Medication Guide for Abilify and printing a warning that is placed directly on the label of the pill bottle. The current legal stance is that this practice was already too late. Patients had been suffering from these horrific side effects for years before the pharmaceutical companies, or the FDA, provided an acceptable warning.

What About Patients Who Took Abilify Before the Warning Was Applied?

Abilify was approved for use as an antipsychotic drug in 2002. By 2009, patients were widely reporting their compulsive, uncontrollable side effects to physicians. These recordings were reported in medical journals 2011 by the US National Library of Medicine, National Institute of Health, and the British Journal of Psychology, before being published by the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2014.

With an official warning not arriving from the FDA until 2016, users had spent more than 14 years ingesting the dangerous drug without the forewarning that they may be unknowingly disrupting their lives due to the dangerous side effects.

These patients may be entitled to their day in court to tell how Abilify created hardships that potentially could have been foreseen by the drug makers and marketers for well over a decade.

What Do the Compulsive Side Effects Mean to Patients?

The side effects associated with Abilify can lead to any number of disruptive factors, and there have been reports from patients describing pitfalls from which they cannot recover without financial help.

These reported cases include:

  • Loss of financial stability from gambling, including repossessed homes
  • Family upheaval and divorce from infidelities associated with hyper sexuality
  • Diminished trust with family, friends, and in the community
  • Costs of gambling, sex, and eating rehabilitation center participation and medical care
  • Insurmountable debt from keeping up with compulsions
  • Ongoing complications at work or job loss
  • Legal trouble

Compulsivity is defined as the persistent, irresistible impulse to perform an act. Any act. When this definition lends itself to gambling, sex, eating, or shopping, the outcome can be devastating for the patients and their families.
