Decreasing the Risk of Injury and Death in a Bicycle Accident

Bicycle accidents can end in devastating and severe injuries, even death. Just recently, Bono from the band U2, was in a bicycle accident in which he sustained injuries similar to those that would come from a car accident. The injuries included multiple bone fractures in Bono’s elbow, back, and face.

The accident, which occurred in December, has caused Bono to be out of commission for a few months. However, he will be able to participate in the band’s large North American tour set for 2015 – though he may have to miss a few performances.

One of the things that kept Bono from sustaining even more severe injuries was his use of a helmet. Although helmets are not guaranteed to save one from a traumatic brain injury or death every time, they dramatically decrease the risk.

Not all adults wear helmets while riding their bicycles, and although in most states it is the law for children under the age of 18 to do so, a child not wearing his or her helmet while bike riding is still spotted from time to time.

Even though bicycle accidents are often caused by the negligence of a third party, usually another motor vehicle driver, the bicyclist can take steps to protect him or herself in the case of an accident or even to prevent an accident.

Wearing a Helmet Is One of Those Steps

Another step is to be vigilant. Pay attention to what the cars on the roads around you are doing. Unfortunately, distracted driving has become increasingly common with people texting while driving, looking at the internet while driving, and talking on their cell phones while driving.

Distracted driving has been found to be similar to, and even worse than, driving while intoxicated. In fact, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that texting while driving is six times more dangerous than drunk driving – a sobering fact.
