“The leading rule for the lawyer, as for the man of every other calling, is diligence. Leave nothing for tomorrow which can be done today.” – Abraham Lincoln
Robert B. Smith is an associate attorney at Bertoldo, Baker, Carter & Smith. Robert grew up in Lodi, a small town located in Northern California. Following high school, he attended California State University, Sacramento, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in history with a minor in government. Robert then completed a graduate program in education at CSU Sacramento.
After graduating from college, Robert spent 10 years teaching middle school U.S. and world history in Sacramento. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Robert served as the middle school athletic director. This opportunity allowed him to further his passion for basketball, coaching both middle and high school basketball teams to multiple league and tournament titles.
From a young age, Robert had an interest in serving his community and the law. His interest in serving his community led him to teaching history, a subject that he loves. In 2000, Robert applied to and was accepted to the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law. He continued to teach a full a course load and attended law school at night. While attending McGeorge, he was a member of the Traynor Honor Society and graduated with honors. In 2005, he graduated and accepted a position with one of the largest defense firms in the state of Nevada. He then passed the bar exam in both California and Nevada. The practice of law allows Robert to continue to serve his community by assisting people who have been injured by someone else’s negligence.
Prior to coming to Bertoldo, Baker, Carter & Smith, Robert worked for a multi-state insurance defense firm with offices in Nevada and California. He eventually became a partner with the firm, managing its Las Vegas office. There, he defended hospitals, doctors, dentists, nurses, and other healthcare providers in both litigated and board matters. In addition to representing medical providers, Robert represented clients who were involved in automobile accidents, slip and fall incidents, homeowners’ association disputes, contract disputes, and construction defect cases. This provided him the opportunity to take a number of cases to trial in both California and Nevada as lead counsel and second-chair counsel.
Robert’s 15+ years of experience representing insurance companies allows him to see cases from the insurance companies’ points of view and, importantly, to use this knowledge to better represent his injured clients.
In addition to his work representing clients, Robert also serves as a court-appointed arbitrator for the Eighth Judicial District Court, assisting parties in finding cost-effective resolutions to their legal disputes.
When Robert isn’t at work, he enjoys going to the gym and playing tennis and basketball. He also enjoys traveling and spending time with the love of his life, Lisa, as well as his three children and nieces and nephew.
