Traffic Accident Rates on the Rise in Las Vegas

New data released by the city of Las Vegas shows that accident rates in the city and in Clark County are dramatically rising. Officials speculate as to the cause of the increase in accidents, particularly motor vehicle accidents, and are pointing to the increase in residents over the past few years.

Over 1.8 million people live in Clark County, up over 200,000 in just two years. In 2004 there were 145 people who were killed as a result of a traffic accident and 157 deaths this year so far. Sgt. Tracy McDonald of the Las Vegas Metro traffic police has said the increase in traffic deaths is something the city has never seen in its history.

The metro traffic division has reports of some 2,500 accidents each month. Almost half of these accidents involved injuries and about one percent involved a death.

In most cases speed has played a role. The increase in accidents, along with the increase in population, will undoubtedly lead to an increase in lawsuits filed by injured parties. All traffic related accidents should be documented as officially as possible, through police and medical reports, and through eyewitness statements and contact information. The licenses and make, model, and year of all vehicles involved should be noted for future reference.
