Due to circumstances resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has extended the REAL ID enforcement deadline to October 1, 2021.
The REAL ID Act was passed in 2005 to enact minimum security, authentication, and issuance standards for driver’s licenses and identity documents. After the 2021 deadline, individuals who have not upgraded their identification to be REAL ID compliant will not be able to access Federal facilities, which include TSA security checkpoints at all U.S. airports.
This extension provides Nevada residents with more time to plan and prepare for the identification requirements necessary to travel onboard commercial aircraft on domestic flights.
THE REAL ID DEADLINE EXTENSION PROVIDES MORE TIME TO PLAN FOR COMPLIANCE
As the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles prepares to reopen after the mandated COVID-19 closures, they are anticipating heavy traffic that will have to abide by the physical distancing requirements the department puts in place to help keep our residents safe.
The physical distancing requirements will limit the number of people the department can service, causing significant delays for those who are seeking new driver’s licenses, registrations, and license plates.
For the first 30 days after the Nevada DMV reopens, the offices are only serving customers with an immediate need such as a private party vehicle sale or suspended driver’s license.
DMV officials recommend those who need a REAL ID wait until they have an additional reason for visiting their local branch, which could include renewing their license, vehicle registrations, and name or address changes.
With the REAL ID deadline extension in place, Nevada residents have more than one year to plan for compliance.
WHAT WILL I NEED TO COMPLY WITH THE REAL ID REQUIREMENTS IN NEVADA?
To upgrade a Nevada driver’s license to be REAL ID compliant, residents must bring valid original documents or certified copies of the following documents that were issued in the United States.
Those documents include:
- Proof of identity
- Proof of all name changes, if applicable
- Proof of social security number
- Proof of Nevada residential address
- Application for driving privileges or ID Card
- All documents will be scanned and stored, and the originals will be returned during the same visit.
