The Dangers of Texting While Driving

A Miami woman is facing charges of DUI manslaughter when she drove through a red light while texting her boyfriend “2 drunk 2 care”, causing her to slam into a truck. Her blood alcohol limit was more than twice the legal limit. While the woman and the truck driver both survived the accident, the woman’s passenger, her friend, died.

In another recent fatal car accident, a Tallahassee woman was speeding while texting, causing her to crash into another car, killing the driver. The Tallahassee woman now faces vehicular homicide charges. After reviewing her driving record, police discovered that the woman had two previous driving charges, where she was found to be at fault.

Putting Yourself and Others at Risk

The dangers of texting while driving behind the wheel are both real and serious, and the number of fatalities as a result of texting behind the wheel are dramatically increasing.

Drivers who use a cell phone while driving are four times as likely to be involved in a car accident than those who do not. It just takes a few seconds for a driver to take their eyes off of the road to send a text message, and during those few seconds, anything can happen: you can crash into another car, you can run a red light and get hit by another car, or you can hit and possibly kill a pedestrian crossing the street.
