Is Recovering From a Severe Traumatic Brain Injury Possible?

When a person suffers blunt force trauma to their head, they can sustain a traumatic brain injury. These injuries – also known as TBIs – come in varying degrees of severity with many types of symptoms. Some last for a short time while others can be permanent, even affecting one’s quality of life and ability to function.

Traumatic Brain Injury

One can suffer a traumatic brain injury doing almost anything. However, there are certain activities that have a higher rate of injury to the brain.

These include:

Even with a TBI, it is possible to recover and live a meaningful life. For example, in 2005 in Nevada, a local woman and her friend were driving home when they were involved in a motor vehicle rollover accident.

The woman and her friend were ejected from the car, which caused the woman to sustain:

  • Several broken ribs
  • A fractured right arm
  • Burns on over 30 percent of her body
  • A lacerated liver
  • Fractured neck vertebrae, pelvis, and collarbone
  • A traumatic brain injury that left her with damage to her right occipital lobe, left parietal lobe, and major cortex areas of her brain

Tragically, her friend died from the injuries she sustained in the accident.

The Nevada woman was on a respirator and in a coma for three months, and her family was also urged to remove her from life support by healthcare providers. Her family refused, and now, the woman is almost completely independent. She can go to the gym to exercise and enjoy rock climbing. She also actively participates in a choir group that has improved her speech and her confidence.

Although this woman was in a devastating crash, she was able to recover from her traumatic brain injury. Not everyone is this lucky, but it is possible to regain some functionality after suffering such an injury.

Recovery from this type of injury is expensive, and it can be financially devastating to the victim and his or her loved ones. That’s why consulting a personal injury attorney after an accident causing a TBI is important.
