Avoiding Bike Accidents & What to Do If One Happens
This past summer, a bicyclist tragically died after being struck by a car in Las Vegas. The victim was riding his bicycle when he was hit from behind by a motor vehicle. The driver was arrested as it was suspected that she was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
A bicycle accident can have devastating consequences, as evidenced by this fatal accident in the city earlier this summer. Unfortunately, there is also a stigma against bike riders when they are involved in accidents. Many drivers are too quick to blame the bike rider as being the cause of the accident, rather than looking at the whole situation.
Every bicyclist is urged to follow the rules of the road. This will ensure that they are being safe and keeping themselves out of harm’s way. Additionally, it will ensure that they are more easily visible when sharing the road with other motor vehicles.
For example, a cyclist should always:
- Take care not to interfere with the motion of anyone driving a motor vehicle
- Utilize bike lanes on roads, if they are available
- Ride their bicycle with the flow of traffic, not against it
Operators of motor vehicles are urged to:
- Try to avoid a collision with a bicycle
- Pass bike riders on the left if the motor vehicle and the bicycle are sharing a traffic lane
- Pay extra attention to blind spots, especially when switching lanes and making turns
Despite these rules of the road, 52,000 bike riders are injured and 716 cyclists are killed due to bicycle accidents every year. About 14 percent of all traffic accident fatalities involved bicyclists.
